The Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve offers a variety of guided tour options.

School Field Trips – available for grades K-12
October – April, Tuesday – Friday
Reservations are required at least two weeks in advance.
Field trips are scheduled for 1 hour and 45 minutes and includes the following activities:
- Guided tour of the permanent museum exhibit, petroglyph site and nature preserve
- Petroglyph search activity
- Mesquite bean grinding with manos and mutates
- Take-home activity
Our knowledgeable educators will introduce your students to the following:
- Archaeology
- Prehistoric native cultures of Arizona
- Rock art
- Desert ecology

Guided Tours
Docent-guided tours of the Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve are available for groups of a minimum of 10 people. The 90-minute tour provides an in-depth look at the preserve, the Adobe Dam project and the 1,500 petroglyphs. It allows visitors to gain a deeper understanding of the historic importance of the site and desert landscape, and ask questions of knowledgeable docents along the way.

Life in the Desert
Each spring the Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve offers a deeper look at the nature and ecology of the Sonoran Desert, with its Life in the Desert Tours. These limited engagement events focus on the plants and wildlife that are in full bloom in the spring months and teaches visitors about how the prehistoric native people would have incorporated them into their daily life.

Sunset Tours
During the summer months, the Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve offers visitors the chance to experience the magic of the Hedgpeth Hills at Sunset. Docents will lead groups outside to witness the famous Arizona sunsets, while getting a unique view of the petroglyphs that is available only once a year. Reservations required in advance, please call for times and dates.
