Global Challenges: European Solutions*
The ASU/UNIL Social Sciences Summer Institute,
Lausanne Switzerland
Tentative Dates: July 15–Aug. 11, 2012
Bringing together top social science faculty from ASU with some of the top experts in Europe, this innovative program encourages students from a wide range of majors to come together to examine, discuss and work at solving some of the most complicated and challenging problems we face in the US, and globally. How do we build sustainable, effective cities? Create peace? Eliminate poverty? Encourage real democracy? Guarantee wellbeing for all families? Using the unique perspectives and often remarkable advances made in Switzerland and other Western European nations as our setting off point, this program has a strong emphasis on learning through exploring and doing, and on teamwork, interactive discussion and critical thinking.
Our partner, the University of Lausanne (founded 1537), is one of the foremost universities in Switzerland and Europe. Like ASU, it is committed to promoting the value of interdisciplinary scholarship, and has special strengths in the areas of social sciences, sustainability and environmental issues, urban design, social policy, global governance and politics, aging, communication and health/medicine.
Stunning Lausanne is located at the heart of the French-speaking region of Switzerland, in the middle of Europe – close to France, Germany, Italy and Austria, which are all quickly and easily reached by train. Our base is on the shores of Lake Geneva, historical, cool and surrounded by views of the Alps and the lake. It provides the ideal setting for balancing study and research with the fun of cycling or sailing the lake, hiking the alps and exploring castles, as well as independent weekend travel to the most beautiful parts of Switzerland and exciting locations in Europe. Lausanne is the home of the International Olympic Committee, and the United Nations and Geneva are only 30 minutes away.
