The Geomatics track provides undergraduate and graduate students of all skill levels with instruction in Geophysical Testing, Geoarchaeology and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in archaeological contexts. Located at the Center for American Archeology in Kampsville, students will gain experience
- collecting, processing, and interpreting geophysical data as they map buried archaeological features;
- develop a knowledge of the basic concepts of pedogenesis (soil formation) and geomorphology and how these two subjects relate to our interpretation of the archaeological record, and learn methods of geoarchaeological data collection and analysis; and
- receive training in managing and analyzing diverse datasets, including, georeferencing spatial data, map and database integration, digital surface analysis, aerial and satellite remote sensing methods, image processing and predictive modeling.
This intensive, 6-week course will provide hands-on practice in field and laboratory methods within the context of the Center for American Archaeology’s ongoing landscape-scale research project in the Lower Illinois Valley.
