Advising
Undergraduates:
Q: How often should I meet with an advisor?
A: It is recommended that you speak with an advisor at least once a semester.
Q: What can I expect from my advisor?
A: Expect your advisor to:
- Be available for an appointment each semester.
- Accurately advise you on academic, career, and scholarship opportunities.
- Assist you in graduating in a timely manner.
- Be available by telephone and/or e-mail.
Q: What will my advisor expect from me?
A: Your advisor will expect you to:
- Keep your scheduled appointment and show up on time.
- Be familiar with the ASU General Catalog degree requirements and your class schedule under registration/enrollment on ASU Interactive and your major checksheet.
- Bring your DARS report with you to see the advisor.
- Keep your address, telephone number and email address current with the university.
- Participate in preregistration.
- Take ownership of your academic career.
Q: How do I speak with an advisor?
A: You can either “walk-in” during scheduled office hours or schedule an appointment. Students who come during office hours are seen on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are a current student, you must familiarize yourself with the degree requirements and bring your DARS printout in order to meet with the advisor. Advising appointments last no more than 15 minutes during the busy times of the year.
Q: Who is the advisor for anthropology students and how do I schedule an appointment?
A: Alissa Ruth is the undergraduate academic advisor for the School of Human Evolution and Social Change. During the summer she will be seeing students by appointment only. Please contact her by e-mail at Alissa.Ruth@asu.edu, or call (480) 965-4628 to schedule an appointment or ask any questions. She is located in the SHESC Building, Room 216.
Q: What do I need to do if I am on Academic Probation?
A: Students on Academic Probation must set up an appointment to speak with their major advisor before they can register for classes. Probation appointments take approximately 1/2 hour. The student will need to read over the information located on this Web page: http://clas.asu.edu/students/advising/preappointment.htm. The student must print out the contract and bring it to the appointment. If the student has not read over the information before the appointment, and does not bring the contract, the advisor will not be able to see the student.
