Preserving the Petroglyphs of South Mountain Park

Theme:
Culture, Heritage and Identity

Description

Our plan has eight objectives, which begin in July 2005:

1) Engage local tribal communities for long-term support of the project
and participation for assessing the significance of traditional
cultural properties;

2) Train archaeologists, rangers, volunteers and tribal members in petroglyph recording;

3) Nominate petroglyph sites for the National Register of Historic Places;

4) Create a database for referencing geographic coordinates with photos and attribute information;

5) Analyze spatial, image and attribute data to create a master map of petroglyph sites;

6) Assess the conditions and significance of petroglyphs to provide a basis for interpretive programs;

7) Evaluate petroglyph recording methods and make recommendations regarding standards;

8) Develop cultural resource guidelines following the City of Phoenix
Master Plan for South Mountain Park in order to enhance public access
to petroglyphs, with interpretive signs, trail guides, and self-guided
tours.
