Ethnographic Fieldwork
Cancelled for summer 2012
The Dar Si-Hmad for Development, Education and Culture and the ASU School of Human Evolution and Social Change are excited to announce a unique internship opportunity in the surrounding rural regions of Sidi Ifni in Morocco.
Dar Si-Hmad creates worthy and valuable opportunities for the region, for the people of the Aït Baamrane and for all the collaborators and partners participating in its diverse projects. Dar Si-Hmad creates education and livelihood projects with the desire to provide and strengthen the skills and proficiencies of local people while respecting natural resources and the environment. Its mission is to promote and preserve local culture and heritage. Dar Si-Hmad aspires to be a source and a means for spreading knowledge of the history and the particular characteristics of the region; to be a platform for cultural and intellectual exchanges on both a national and an international level.
Over 6 weeks, students will work with Dar Si-Hmad to develop a health program for rural communities. This can count for the global health study abroad requirement.
Information about the Internship
The general objective of Dar Si-Hmad is to achieve a better quality of life for the region through the creation of innovative and lasting projects that address the needs of the communities and the people faced with problems posed by a rapidly evolving society. Specifically, this involves working towards implementing projects for a general interest in sustainable, dignified livelihood, while maintaining respect for cultural, historic and environmental settings. The work in the region will attain these objectives via the implementation of scientific innovation in the field of ecology, with an emphasis on theoretical and technological know-how, as well as the promotion and exchange of knowledge.
Thus, Dar Si-Hmad is seeking to establish a health-program for the rural communities living in the Anti-Atlas region where access to health services is limited. Four ASU interns and their coordinators will conduct a survey in 3 rural communes in order to determine the dominant types of ailments prevalent in the region. Dar Si-Hmad encourages both male and female candidates to apply.
Upon arrival, interns will take a 24-hour rest from jetlag, and will have three days of orientation (May 15–17) with exercises and drills. Following this, we will have two days (May 18–19) for a preliminary field-visit with Sunday May 20 off. Three days (May 21–23) will be spent designing and translating the survey (with possibly two more days if necessary). Data collection will start on May 24 and continue until May 31. Interns will take four days' rest (June 1–4) and resume data collection on June 5 and conclude on June 11. June 12 will be a day of rest, and from June 14 until the end of the internship on June 24, interns and their coordinators will work on data entry and analysis. They are supposed to produce a document summarizing their findings and proposing some future orientation for the program. They will be asked to do a presentation to the program director and staff with a Q & A segment following the session.
While the design of the survey will be done with the help of a professional, it is important that students have prior experience in designing a survey, and preferably health surveys. As Dar Si-Hmad aims to explore OT and PT possibilities, we want these surveys to be as inclusive as possible. Students will be going out into the field with a coordinator fluent in the local language and in English.
