ASM 548 Geoarchaeology (3 credits)
Geoarchaeology—the application of earth-science methods in archaeological research—has become an indispensable and necessary skill for archaeologists. This course is aimed at all skill levels in archaeology and geoarchaeology, from beginners who want to learn the basics of soil description and interpretation to more advanced students wishing to further their skills in a specific geoarchaeological topic. Each student will receive a solid grounding in the foundations of soils, sediments and landforms as they apply to archaeological research, and geoarchaeological field and laboratory methods. This course is composed of lectures; informal discussions; hands-on field- and laboratory-based research; and field trips to a diverse array of soil exposures and archaeological sites. Each student will conduct fieldwork at a local archaeological site, and complete a research project from the data collected.
