The school’s summer internship and practicum program provides a flexible way for students to draw on the international expertise of our world-renowned faculty. Working with faculty mentors, students develop individualized plans for their summer. Students can work singly or in small groups to develop their plans, meaning students might travel alone or with a few others with shared interests.

Options include:

  • service learning;
  • internships;
  • participating in ongoing faculty collaborations or research;
  • independent research; and
  • creative projects.

Individualized Summer and Winter Internships and Practica

Some opportunities link students to specific faculty and their international work. In other cases, we help students execute their own plans.

With the help of our school's study abroad program office, students:

  • identify a faculty mentor on campus;
  • work with the mentor to develop a practicum/internship course work plan;
  • select the international site(s) for the practicum/internship; and
  • decide on and complete any logistical arrangements.

Students from any major at ASU are welcome to participate in the program. Non-ASU students who would like the opportunity to work with our school's accomplished faculty on areas of expertise can often be accommodated, and are also welcome.

Internship and practicum possibilities are most often linked to the school’s core themes, which allow for the accommodation of a diversity of interests, desired experiences and learning goals.

Examples of internships/practica planned by prior students:

  • primatology fieldwork in South America or Africa
  • archaeological fieldwork and laboratory analyses at Aztec sites in Mexico
  • museum studies in London
  • indigenous community development, health and environment in Fiji
  • paleoanthropology in South Africa
  • infectious diseases laboratory and field research in tropical South America
  • ethnographic, conservation and community-based field research in Paraguay.
